In the digital era, when most of the bulky hardware of early recording studios is considered unnecessary, the impact of the microphone is often overlooked by the amateur in the recording equation. Different microphones pick up different sounds at different volumes from different directions. This means that your choice of microphones can drastically alter the sound of a recording. For the musician and/or recording engineer who strives for quality, even for recording something as casual as a demo tape, a fundamental knowledge of how different microphones function and how to best use them is key for creating truly exceptional recordings.

This book will teach the reader, who may know next to nothing about microphones, how to choose the proper microphone for any situation. The author, a music school graduate with over ten years of recording experience, explains simple and advanced ideas clearly and concisely enough for even a total novice recordist to understand without compromising the fundamental information presented. Topics covered include condenser, dynamic, and ribbon microphones, polar patterns, phasing and interference, mic placement for different instruments and situations, and sound insulating rooms. The reader will hopefully come away from this book with a fundamental knowledge of microphones that can be used and expanded upon throughout their musical and recording career.

The Beginner Guide to Microphones eBook Brendan Krueger

This is an excellent title for anyone looking for an introduction to recording audio, with the focus being on microphones. The information is kept practical. Theory is explained enough to make it all make sense, but nothing is over-explained beyond what is useful for making real-world choices. Common equipment is discussed with enough detail to make good decisions about the equipment and how to go about finding the right way to use it. Acoustics is science, but when it's all said and done, recording is an art, with no fixed "right" way to do things, and the author brings this point across. Historical equipment and techniques are left out, and that makes sense. If you want to know how to get good results now, you probably don't want to muck around with learning about carbon resistive mics from the dawn of electronics, which have no relevance today. Reading this, I feel I have a solid basis for selecting equipment to test for purchase, some basic field and studio techniques for setup, and some really good tips for post-production.

helped me learn about microphones, useful for my paintball videos as i knew nothing about what it takes to record audio before!
This is a really accessible and comprehensive guide that proved to be very helpful to an audio novice such as myself. I definitely have a better grasp on the subject and how I can better improve my recording techniques for the video game project I'm currently working on. Highly recommended!
I haven't read it all the way through, but what I've read so far has been very well explained. I really like how Polar Patterns are presented - I have a feeling I'll be referencing this book a lot. Thank you!
Was looking to buy a few mics to do some simple, hopefully decent sounding recordings and didn't know where to start. This book made it a lot easier to decide. I like how some typical mic models and their prices are listed for each different use. I think this is a good read for someone trying to figure out what to buy. Considering how much microphones cost, this book is practically free.
